Windhorst Leads Truth in Public Safety Working Group, Outlines Agenda to Restore Public Safety

SPRINGFIELD, IL – House Republican Floor Leader and State Representative Patrick Windhorst (R-Metropolis) currently heads the House Republican working group titled “Truth in Public Safety”. The Metropolis Republican is a former Massac County prosecutor. Windhorst led a Capitol news conference on Wednesday to outline the House Republicans’ agenda to Restore Public Safety.

“What I have seen legislators from the other side of the aisle has been a constant push to pass legislation that has seriously degraded our police officers’ ability to do their jobs effectively, elevated rights for criminals, and eroded the rights of victims,” Windhorst said. “House Republicans fought the SAFE-T Act, warning our fellow citizens that the law would harm our law enforcement officers and our court system while increasing risks to public safety.”

Windhorst, who is also a member of the House Judiciary Criminal Law and Restorative Justice Committees, says in response to Democrats’ progressive lurch to the left on public safety issues, the Truth in Public Safety working group is sponsoring a bold public safety legislative agenda.

“We have put together a strong, comprehensive package of legislation I hope that our colleagues will see value in, and allow fair hearings and votes to be taken on them before next Friday’s Committee Deadline.”

Windhorst detailed the following bills that have come about as the result of the Truth in Public Safety working group.

HB 1478 – Creates the offense of fentanyl child endangerment.

HB 1479 – Revocation of pretrial release.

HB 1482 – Expands the detention net for pre-trial release.

HB 1483 – Pre-trial release – warrants for failure to comply with pretrial release conditions.
