SOUTHERN ILLINOIS – State Senator Paul Jacobs (R-Pomona) and State Representative Patrick Windhorst (R-Metropolis) are urging that negotiations between the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and the vendor that services the Cave-In-Rock Ferry continue, after Ferry services were halted on Tuesday night. Sen. Jacobs and Rep. Windhorst issued the following joint statement.
“Thousands of people rely on the Cave-In-Rock Ferry for transportation back and forth across the Ohio River each year. The Ferry has been a vital part of Southern Illinois’ history and a valuable service that saves commuters a drive of up to one hour to cross the Ohio River between Kentucky and Illinois. Illinois and Kentucky split the cost of operating the Ferry, with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet being the lead negotiator for the contract.
“We have been working with transportation officials on both the Illinois and Kentucky sides, the Ferry Authority, the operator, and Kentucky legislators to ensure this matter is addressed to keep the Ferry operating.
“The Ferry, which is a safe and reliable mode of transportation for commercial traffic, people going to work, and tourists, generates tens of millions of dollars in economic benefit to both Kentucky and Illinois each year. For the benefit of the State of Illinois, the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and the thousands of people who rely on the Ferry, we urge negotiations to continue. We want the Ferry to continue operating for the benefit of all who rely on it.”
